The Full
E-mersion : Phase I |
|
 |
 |
 |
Phase 1 of the research work
covers three semesters, from spring 2005 to spring
2006, and undertakes the evaluation, revision, and
program-wide implementation of the Full E-mersion
model in
English 189. The latter is a sentence-to-paragraph,
entry-level Developmental Composition course, three
steps below Freshman Composition.
The primary research team for
Phase 1 includes Chris Juzwiak (course instructor),
Denise Ezell (faculty researcher), Angela
Morales (faculty researcher), and four student
researchers: Susan Janoubi, Diana Penada, Edwin
Alvarado, and Zeinab Albatal.
1st Semester
For each class meeting, Juzwiak writes an overview
of the day's lesson plan and an assessment of the
technology component in the lesson. Ezell and
Morales attend each class and write their
evaluations of the lesson and the use of technology. Twice
a week, Ezell and Morales meet in the computer lab
with their student researchers (Janoubi/Penada and
Alvarado/Albatal, respectively) to observe the
students using the class website. These interviews
are captured using a digital voice recorder, and
summary notes may be written by the faculty
researcher. Finally, the faculty participants meet
once a week to discuss their research findings. The
weekly meetings are captured on video and delivered
in streaming video format.
The research may incorporate several
mini-projects, such as interviews with the whole
class, interviews with past English 189 students
currently enrolled in higher level English
classes, a faculty-student pairing to observe a
student working with a specially designed
PowerPoint self-tutorial on using articles.
During the summer
intercession, the
faculty team will revise and augment the course
materials on the 189
website. They will
develop additional learning activities that are
carefully sequenced, student-centered, and built
on self-reflective pedagogy. A list of tasks
includes: updating and completing quiz
sequences; adding feedback to all quizzes;
generating practice quizzes for the Wordbank;
writing a hyperlinked syllabus and a complete
online rubric with sample, hyperlinked essays;
devising drag and drop exercises; creating
interactive exercises on topic sentences,
coherence, and development; adding audio files;
completing the My Grammar Challenges and
the Master Students features. As part of
this work, Ezell and Morales will become skilled
users of PowerPoint and FrontPage.

2nd
Semester
Ezell and Morales will teach sections of English
189, incorporating as much as the new technology
as possible. Team leader Juzwiak will coach and
assist them in their implementation of
the electronic pedagogy. He will
meet with the instructors before
each class session to provide sustained
instruction and support in the basic use of
PowerPoint and WebCT. In addition, he
will conduct recorded exit interviews with
students from both classes. Finally, all three faculty
participants will write notes for each class
session, and their weekly faculty meeting will
be videotaped.
3rd
Semester
Ezell and Morales will teach new
sections of English 189, refining their use of
the electronic pedagogy and advancing their
technological skills. Once again, Juzwiak will
be a full-time participant, providing feedback
and evaluation. He will be paired with two
students from each class, meeting with them in
the computer lab to observe their work on the
class website. Before each class session,
Juzwiak will provide training to Ezell and
Morales in the advanced programming of PowerPoint, FrontPage, and WebCT.
All research will be captured in the four
formats used during previous semesters.
