Carnegie Notes from Oct.
24th through Oct. 28th
This week in class we worked on coordination, subordination, and run-ons / comma splices. I added to and revised the slides on run-ons, but for next semester, I hope to create separate slides and practice for 1) periods & semicolons; 2) coordinating conjunctions, 3) subordinators, and 4) conjunctive adverbs. I fear that having a number of methods in the same slide show was too much for them to retain, although they were all familiar with the methods, and I DO want to teach them all together so that they learn to distinguish which punctuation is correct for which transition (when between complete thoughts). I felt that I held their attention, for the most part, with the slides and that though I want to tweak the arrangement, the students followed the lessons. (Getting them to remember is the problem ~ they still seem to want to correct a run-on with a comma, although they were supposed to have had all the run-on quizzes released, but somehow, the person releasing the quizzes had forgotten or lost the list or something, so they lost a week of practice before I realized they had no drill.)
