23rd class meeting, Spring 2005

Class activities: Students received their midterms back and reviewed various fragment types.

As with before, Chris started by having students identify the fragment type.  He then displayed, one at a time, the types of fragments on the screen (those starting with a verb, added-detail fragments, dependent word fragments, and hidden dependent word fragments).  In each case, Chris underlined the word creating the fragment (the verb, the dependent word, or the hidden dependent verb).  He would then add to the fragment to correct it.  This would segue into students correcting fragments (either by combining sentences or adding words), first in small groups of sentences, then in larger groups.  He would then review student answers and show TWO ways they could have corrected sentences for EACH fragment.  This slow build from examining single sentences with errors to finding and correcting errors in longer passages provided a strong review of this important lesson after their spring break.  In the lab, only one student was able to attend, and she did have problems with a few fragments, but she worked slowly and reviewed her work before submitting her quizzes.
