Class Overview:

Today I observed the class continue their lesson on paragraph outlining. Chris presented the class with numerous slides, many of which contained intentional errors. Students identified parts of the outlines which did not support the topic sentence. He provided them with several examples, both correct and incorrect. Many students volunteered the answers and, once again, appeared to be intrigued by the lesson.

Commendations:

The sheer repetition of the outline lessons really seems to have a positive impact on students’ learning. By now they seem to have become accustomed to the class format, and they are able to “plug right in.” I would guess that students will be well prepared to come in on Friday and begin writing their first paragraphs. It was nice to see students debating each other to get the correct answers. So many students raised their hands and were trying to speak up. The slides got progressively trickier, which encouraged the stronger students to stay interested.

Recommendations:

A couple of the slides were a little confusing. When the class discussed these sample outlines, a couple of the slides on “music is important in my life” contained reasons that are probably not distinct enough.  These are minor adjustments—otherwise the slides are great.
