Class Overview:
Today students began working on a new paragraph topic—“Spending the Day with a Celebrity.” Students viewed the prompt on the screen via PowerPoint as well as on paper.
They looked for clues in the prompt that would help them refine their details, and Chris underlined in red the key points in the prompt. For the second half of class, students began to write their outlines. They viewed the basic outline template on the screen, and Chris filled in a sample topic (A Day with Jennifer Lopez). Students followed along using their own topics.
Comments:
Once again, the slides were clean and simple. Students were able to read the prompts both on hard copy and up on the screen. Asking students to view the topic as a group really seems to unify the class in terms of what they’re paying attention to. By asking them to look at a central visual, they pay attention more closely (or at least appear to). All of the slides students viewed in class today were slides that should have been familiar to them by now. I can really see the benefit in this type of repetition. Students know what to expect when it comes to layout and format, and by now, many of them seem to quickly absorb the daily lessons and review.
