Class Overview:

Students worked in the writing lab today. They reviewed linking verbs. Chris had a dynamic slideshow prepared with sentences were at times complete and at times sentence fragments. “Melissa seems sad” became “Melissa seems” or “Melissa sad” to make the point that linking verbs must link up with adjectives to be complete. Students also learned about adjectives and adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions. Students were asked to take quizzes immediately after each lesson. Moreover, each lesson contained many examples and “fill-in-the-blank” activities so that students could be well prepared before they took the quiz.

Comments:

Today’s lesson was a good example of how useful it can be to teach in a writing lab. Students were able to take their quizzes via WebCT immediately following each lesson segment, and more importantly, they were able to get immediate scores and feedback. This system really makes the teacher’s job much easier (once the materials are written and set up, of course!) The lessons appear to be getting more difficult. My students have told me that they feel the class is also becoming more interesting, which is really quite a compliment to Chris’s class structure and setup.
